Dear audience and Clean Air Circle of Mothers, 

Thank you for creating space for mothers’ voices worldwide. I deeply regret not being able to be there in person today—but I’m incredibly grateful that my voice can still join yours.

I rise from a country with a strong coal and car lobby and the most polluted cities in every EU ranking. It’s Poland. Our children here walk to school daily through clouds of exhaust fumes and smoke from coal stoves. Many live and learn in areas where air pollution regularly exceeds WHO guidelines—without warnings, protection, or alternatives.

As Rodzice dla Klimatu – Parents for Climate Poland, we are tired of bearing the cost of pollution—paying with our children’s health—while its root causes remain unaddressed, sacrificed for short-term political gains. We symbolically „prescribed” clean air to decision-makers across the country, reminding them that clean air is not a privilege – it cannot be bought at a pharmacy. It is the foundation of public health and a fundamental human right – one that continues to be ignored. It’s time for policies that treat clean air as a non-negotiable priority, not a luxury.

The upcoming implementation of the EU Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD) is a historic opportunity – but only if Poland and other EU countries decide to place children’s health at the heart of national policies. That means: no compromises, but urgency. No half-measures, but bold, intersectional leadership.

Our advocacy demands immediate, concrete action to protect the most vulnerable:

• Monitoring air quality around schools
• Creating green buffer zones around schools, nurseries, and kindergartens to protect children from smog, vehicle emissions, noise, and heat
• Reducing car traffic around schools and eliminating coal-burning stoves in these areas
• Introducing school streets, more pedestrian crossings, and expanding cycling infrastructure
• Educating policymakers, whose decisions on infrastructure and investment are still too often driven by short-term business gains, disregarding their impact on public health

Because the science is clear: air pollution doesn’t just cause cough, asthma or chronic illness. It harms children’s cognitive development, mental health, ability to learn, and long-term life potential.

We appeal to decision-makers across Europe and beyond: Be as relentless as a mother whose child cannot breathe. Be as persistent as a parent who refuses to accept toxic air as normal.
